Projection: #bookreview

Projection by Tabatha Shipley takes place in a typical American town where nothing exciting happens. It’s told from the point of view of Emma, an average teenager. The only thing different from real life is that everyone has chip implants so they don’t have to type or memorize anything. Memories can be sent to other people or projected on a screen.

Unfortunately, Emma’s chip begins to malfunction so her memories are shared whether she wants people to know or not. It leads to some pretty embarrassing moments. She also notices that some of the memories never happened.

Emma doesn’t know what is going on but she and her ex-boyfriend, Tyler, are going to find out. Tyler knows how to hack into computers.

Emma’s dad, Steve, is weird. He seems relatively harmless but was he actually harmless? Has anyone thought their friend’s dad was the weirdest dude on the planet? At some point, Tyler’s memory was wiped clean of anything about Emma’s situation. She knows that someone erased his memories but who? Was it her dad or someone he works with?

After Emma reminds Tyler of everything, they take a trip to the place that deals with the chips. Emma’s dad also works there.

Maybe I was hoping for more confrontation between Emma and the bad guys. They didn’t even get caught breaking into the office. I was hoping for a game of hide and seek at least.

The pace of the book seems kind of slow. I felt like I was waiting for something to happen until the last 1/4 of the book. It’s like being a teenager all over again . . . waiting to be an adult. Now look at us . . . being adults.

If you don’t like teenage crushes, technology or science fiction, then this might not be the book for you.
